LOOKING BACK//MOVING FORWARD

I served as art director and lead animator on this series of short films for the Olympics website, which looked back on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. We wanted to create a visual style that referenced the graphic history of Japan, as well its national colors and elegant geometry of its flag.

I recruited freelancers who excelled at their own take on modern digital manga, the style of comics made in Japan. We leaned into the visual language of print, using half tones and starbursts to honor the tactility of the medium. These restraints allowed us to appeal to a broad international audience without relying on stereotypical anime tropes.
